Fretting wear

Fretting corrosion refers to wear marks developed when gears rub against each other due to repeated vibratory micro-motion. The fretting process displaces lubricant, leading to the oxidization and rubbing away of asperities. Depending on the severity, fretting corrosion has a black, or reddish-brown appearance.

The results show that the friction torque was highly influenced by the wear debris acting as the solid lubricant. The TiCN coating reduced the wear volume by 97.6% and 62.3% in oil and artificial seawater, respectively, which was mainly due to an increase in surface hardness.

Fretting wear

Fretting Corrosion (and fretting motion, the driving force behind fretting corrosion). How is this different from normal plain old wear? The big difference is that fretting is a micro-motion issue typically less than 0.005” of movement.

Fretting wear Fretting wear is quite similar to adhesive wear in that microwelding occurs on mating surfaces. The difference is that adhesive wear is related to interfaces that are sliding across each other, while fretting wear is related to interfaces that are essentially stationary with respect to each other.

Fretting refers to wear and sometimes corrosion damage at the asperities of contact surfaces. This damage is induced under load and in the presence of repeated relative surface motion, as induced for example by vibration.
